Myopia

What is Myopia?

Myopia, also known as short-sightedness or near-sightedness, is a common eye condition where distant objects appear blurred, while close objects can be seen clearly. This occurs when the shape of the eye causes light rays to bend (refract) incorrectly, focusing images in front of the retina instead of directly on it

Causes of Myopia

1. Eye Shape: Myopia usually results from the eye being too long, or from the cornea (the clear front cover of the eye) being too curved. This alters the way light is focused inside the eye.

2. Genetics: Myopia often runs in families. If one or both parents are myopic, their children have a higher risk of developing it.

3. Environmental Factors: Extensive close-up work, such as reading or using digital devices for prolonged periods, and a lack of outdoor activity have been linked to the development and progression of myopia, particularly in children.

Symptoms

  • Blurry vision when looking at distant objects
  • The need to squint or partially close the eyelids to see clearly
  • Headaches due to eye strain
  • Difficulty seeing while driving, especially at night

Diagnosis

Myopia is diagnosed through a standard eye exam, where an optometrist or ophthalmologist tests visual acuity using an eye chart and measures the eye’s refractive error.

Myopia in Children

Myopia is a global concern.

Annual myopia progression rate is most rapid under 10 years of age. If left untreated, myopia can lead to lasting vision problems, but together we can curb myopia in children.
